Collages

One day I just started cutting out shapes in paper to design away from the computer, with my bare hands. This felt so good that I’ve now been doing this for many years. Making paper collages is my way to disconnect and let my imagination go wild.

Collage Portfolio: book and magazine version

A selection of my best collages from mid 2016 until the end of 2023 about activism, music, photography, film, travelling, beauty, skateboarding, etc. With cutouts from vintage photos, old newspapers, brown envelopes, parts of road maps end pages from old literature books. Puzzles of cameras, retro cars, instruments, letters in cool fonts, stylish men and women and the sun and the moon.

Having created more than 400 collages in the past decade, it was about time to create a few categories in this vast amount of creations and artworks:

Activist collages

The first category in my portfolio contains activist collage works which have a deeper ground and try to judge a certain topic in our society, in our daily life or in the world around us. I try very often to bring a certain worldly message with a dry sense of humour or with a funny image. Despite this lightness I hope they do make people think about the topic and create an incentive for change. My topics are diverse and often relate to climate change, capitalism, war, freedom, human respect, nature, heritage, environment, mass tourism, etc.

Collages inspired by music

As an amateur, musician, dj, singer-songwriter and music addict this topic lies very close to my heart. For example, by re-using one of my old and damaged music wall posters as source material I can express how much some music bands or their songs have moved me or motivated me in life to improve my music skills. These collages are more personal and can be read as a scattered autobiography.

Entertaining collages

Mostly based on improvisation, aesthetics, colour combinations, experimenting or just having fun. This light category of collages are perfect for postcards, poster prints or wall decorations in a frame.

Collages on skateboards or wood

I love wood and a few years ago the idea popped up to use old skateboards to make more 3-dimensional mixed media artworks or installations. Usually the old decks first get cleaned up by abrasing them to remove the old and often very damaged image to reveal the bare wood structure again. I now have a collection of “spaceboards” which are also for sale together with some smaller wooden collage artworks, ideal for wall decorations.

Prints from scanned collages

Most of my collages get scanned to make prints from the image files. These prints can be small sizes like postcards or A4 but also A3 or 50 by 70cm or options on demand. Just like my collages themselves which vary between 10 cm and 1 meter in height or width. Some of these scanned prints are for sale on my Etsy shop.
