From April 10th until April 20th 12 of my recent and older collage works will be shown in Maison Stepman, Brussels. Together with 3 other artists (The Green Fairy (Annemie Maes), Caroline Klinchamers and Pier Forlano) I got the opportunity to participate in the art expo ‘Memories through layers’. The central theme of the expo is personal travel memories and will be shown through analog and digital collages, assemblages ad textile quilts. More info on here or on the facebook event.

The title of the expo ‘Memories through layers’ consists of the elements ‘memories’ and ‘layers’. The combination of these 2 elements is the guiding principle of the expo of paintings, assemblages, collages, and quilts. Though working with different media, the 4 artists share a common way style of expressing a subject through texture and layers. It is their conviction that the artist’s role in society is to interpret the spirit of the time, to seize the essential trends and inspire others. The 4 artists believe that every voyage is a chapter in their life story, and each memory is a brushstroke on the canvas of their hearts. The landscapes, people, and experiences encountered on these journeys leave a profound impact and invite to transcend boundaries, to relive the magic of travel through the kaleidoscope of art.
The exhibition will transport you to distant lands and immerse you in the essence of the personal travel experiences of 4 unique talents, each profoundly impacted by their journeys. Maison Stepman, the former house and workshop of the artist and decorator Louis Stepman, is a perfect sanctuary where the narratives of their travels will come to life.

The Green Fairy www.annemiemaes.be : The layered collages reflect her fascination with the colourful images of the golden 60s worldwide. For this exhibition, she highlights a journey to Egypt, where she discovered not only the architectural grandeur and unique history of ancient Egypt, but also Egypt’s contribution to the film industry—known as Hollywood on the Nile during the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. It was a time of unparalleled creativity and artistic freedom, featuring sensual Egyptian actresses—without clothing restrictions—in leading roles, creating masterpieces in Arab cinema.
Caroline Klinckhamers www.ck-quilts.com : Caroline comes from a mixed European background and loves old cultures, rich histories and deserted landscapes. She brings to the party an amazing array of fabric skills and sophisticated texture which can also be easily connected to the great old tradition of tapestry. She is a recognised artisan and creates her own unique design for each piece.
Pier Forlano www.pierforlano-art.com : Pier has travelled all his life as a diplomat and collected several tribal art pieces. His technique of sculpted paintings is unique and blends mixed media with 3D rendering. His work often carries a dreamlike story through symbols, but also political fears or desires, like the new landscape created by the birth of populist parties or the possibility of a civil war in US.
Sam Geuens : With a background in science, music, and photography, Sam gradually blended his interests into art and poetry. Often using cutouts from vintage magazines and newspapers, 70’s retro images, used envelopes or old road maps, he lets his imagination run free. For this exhibition, he will present a mix of his works on various materials, incorporating colourful styles and ethnic patterns inspired by countries both near and far.
Annemie and Caroline share a background as archaeologists and travelled together to Egypt and Istanbul, where they became enchanted by the beauty of the countries, the local arts and fascinating architecture. These experiences were deepened through further individual explorations across the globe.
Pier worked in Bulgaria, Malta, South Africa, Australia, Philadelphia and is inspired by tribal art, symbolism, surrealism and graffiti art.
The collaboration between Annemie and Sam Geuens arose naturally from a shared interest in collages and vintage images. Both artists have been living in Brussels for a long time and have been making collages inspired by retro and vintage, often bringing a contemporary current, activist message through their colourful and cheerful collages
